Day 29 started early with the voices of the
fishermen beside the lake at 5.30am. There were about 5 of them and they were
only successful with one smallish catch and a couple not much bigger than a
sardine.
Phill, Chris, Linda and Steve headed off
towards some hilly terrain and Clem and Lesley planned to stay another night at
Veney and do some sightseeing today.
The four of us caught a fernicular from
Veney to get around an almost vertical start to the day. We all managed to ride
and walk our way up some narrow country roads but were well rewarded with some
magnificent views. We stopped for lunch at Bulle and had a bit of a wander
around and spoke to a local who told us we must stop at a Chateau de Gruyere.
It was well worth the look, dating back to the 1100s. Many of the rooms were
furnished in period furniture and there was an exhibition of works by an artist/sculpture
from Zimbabwe. They were very unusual and the sculptures made from scrap metal
were very clever.
We headed off towards out camp for the
night with the head wind we rode into this morning now a tail wind. We asked
for some directions along the way and once again received a personal guide by a
young couple out on their bikes with their 6mth old daughter Lucy. They spoke
great English so we had a lovely chat to them as we road along and they were
very protective of us as we crossed a busy road. They lead us right to the camp
site. We picked our own site as reception did not open until 6pm. We have a
lovely spot again with fabulous mountain rural views. The wind has picked up so
we are hoping we will not get blown away tonight.
